Create Virtual Hard Drive on Windows 8 (without third party software)

Step 1: go to Computer Management , right click on computer from start menu and click on manage.


Step 2 : Create Virtual Hard Drive,  right click on Disk Management and click on Create VHD.


Step 3: Specify Location of VHD and Size.


I have selected hard disk size for this example, but you can enter your own value.After clicking on on this screen VHD will be created on the location you have selected and you should see a new drive added under disk management.




Step 4:  Initialize disk, right click (first box/section) on the new drive and click Initialize Disk.



click through popup 


you should see the status of the new disk has changed to online. but its still unallocated and not ready for use.




Step 5: right click (second box) on the new disk and click New simple Volume, 




click next on the pop up





on next screen windows will display usable volume based on the initial Disk size selected in step 3, click next on this screen



Step 6: Assign Drive letter, select available drive on the computer to attach new hard drive.



Step 7: Format Partition, by default NTFS should be selected, you can also enter label  for new drive which will be displayed on the drive.



click next.



click finish and new drive will be available for use.
